Abstract

As a heterogeneous population, Asian Americans are typically seen as homogenous. Research typically combines them into one group as opposed to a distinct ethnic group. The current study examined whether subethnic match and mismatch among Asian client/ therapist pairs predicted successful completion of therapy and number of treatment sessions while controlling for therapy dropout predictors such as yearly income and years in the United States. The participant data was obtained from a de-identified database of clients and therapists at an ethnic-specific facility in Houston, Texas. The main finding was that subethnic matching of Asian client and therapist pairs predicted successful completion of therapy and number of treatment sessions. The results of the study suggest the need for more subethnic matching of Asian Americans to occur in order to minimize patient dropout from therapy.
