Abstract

A computational study of a three-dimensional vortex-blade is reported for the case where the normal orientation of the blade axis is normal to the vortex axis. Vortex-blade interaction is fundamental in the generation and behavior of secondary vortices which leave resulting structural forces along the blade. The computations are performed using a direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations along with an immersed boundary model. There are three non-dimensional control parameters in the interaction: the impact parameter, the circulation Reynolds number, and the thickness parameter. We show that variations in the impact parameter yield different formations of secondary vortices which subsequently affect the pressure distribution along the blade. Our observations indicate that the size of pressure contours affecting the blade diminishes and the magnitude of the pressure contour increases with increasing impact parameters.
