Abstract

David Ricardo's contributions to monetary theory have overshadowed the ideas of his contemporaries, including Henry Thornton, although Henry Thornton's writings antedated Ricardo's and seem to be the more original and perceptive. It is the purpose of this dissertaiton to analyze, summarize and evaluate the monetary theory of the early English classicists (1776-1821) with the particular purpose of shedding additional light on the ideas of Henry Thornton in comparison to and in contrast with the ideas of the other writers of the period.
