Abstract

According to The Brookings Institution, globally fluent cities are "metropolitan areas that are appealing, open and opportunity-rich which serve as magnets for attracting people and firms from around the world." The Dharavi Slum of Mumbai has proven to be an opportunity-rich economic hub with a successful business environment, diversity, and "livable" neighborhoods that challenge western standards of what it means to live a happy life. Constructivism asks us to challenge our ideas of social norms, values, the way they interact to form our systems, and how those systems in return shape our norms. Moreover, The success of Dharavi asks us to fundamentally question our standards of what makes a city livable.
