Abstract

Background. We explored the use of popular language in Juan Rulfo’s collection of short stories El llano en llamas (1953) by defining and identifying examples of oral and colloquial prose. We sought to incorporate digital tools to complement our analysis. The goal of our interdisciplinary approach was to identify to what extent could specific digital tools enrich our literary analysis. Conclusions. We faced significant limitations when working with R as we were unable to implement some of the program’s most sophisticated functions (e.g. sentiment analysis) to our Spanish-language corpus. AntConc, Voyant Tools and R allowed for a quantitative analysis which included term frequency, sentence length, and the identification of lexical patterns. However, we were unable to use our digital tools to recognize expressions and style particular of oral prose.
