Abstract

The scientific study of burnout is still in its infancy and researchers have only begun to understand this recently noted phenomenon. Burnout is linked to many negative variables and seems to especially affect those who are dedicated and committed to their work (Maslach, 1982a). Hcwever, very few authors cite data specifically relevant to their burnout conceptions and continued research is needed to provide more knowledge of the occupational hazards involved. The purpose of this study was to provide information relative to burnout among public school counselors. It investigated the level of stress, job satisfaction, and absenteeism among public school counselors and how these variables inpacted the dependent variable of burnout. Clarifying which variables influence burnout will lay the groundwork for education, prevention, and remediation. The subjects for this study were seventy-seven female public school counselors in two suburban school districts. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the data.
