Abstract

The Reformulated Learned Helplessness Model of Depression attempts to clarify the role of depressive explanatory style in the etiology and maintenance of depression. The present study attempts to extend the generalizability of this model to Ss in an inpatient alcohol treatment program. The stability of the Attributional Style Questionnaire (ASQ) was demonstrated. The ASQ-depression relationship was found to be much stronger at the beginning of hospitalization than at the end. Two measures of cognitive style, including the ASQ, were found to explain significant unique variance in severity of depression after partialling out the effects of recent life events.
