Abstract

The nonlinear interaction that occurs between long waves which simulate ocean swell and short waves which simulate wind waves were studied in the laboratory. The experiment is divided into two basic studies: 1) the modification and physical changes of the short waves that occur when they interact with the long waves that are propogating in the same direction, and 2) the energy transfer and dissipation of the two component wave system as the interaction occurs. Also, wave reflection and attenuation were studied for a single component system. This gave a known basis of energy dissipation with which to compare the energy considerations of the two component wave system.
