Abstract

The major purpose of this study was to investigate the academic achievement of a group of elementary and junior high school Mexican American students who transferred to schools in which their ethnic group was in the minority as compared to elementary and junior high school Mexican American students who remained in schools in which their ethnic group vzas in the majority. The second purpose was to determine whether there were significant differences in attitudes toward school between the groups at the elementary school level. More specifically the study examined and tested the following hypotheses: 1. There is no significant difference between the academic achievement of Mexican American students at either the elementary or junior high school levels who transfer to schools in which their ethnic groups is in the minority and those who remain in schools in which their ethnic group is in the majority. 2. There is no significant difference of attitudes toward school between elementary Mexican American students who transfer to schools in which their ethnic group is in the minority and those who remain in schools where their ethnic group is in the majority. 3. There is no significant difference of achievement between transfer and non-transfer students as it related to sex or grade level. 4. There is no significant difference of attitude toward school between transfer and non-transfer students as it related to sex or grade level. The sample of the study consisted of 120 Mexican American students from grades four, six, and eight.
