Abstract

Hypertension (HTN) is defined by a blood pressure of over 140/90 mmHg. Individuals with HTN are usually asymptomatic resulting in complications such as cardiovascular events, stroke, and even death. 1 According to a study conducted by the CDC, about 1 in 25 youths ages 12 to 19 have HTN and 1 in 10 has elevated blood pressure.2 There are many modifiable risk factors such as lifestyle choices, diet, and physical activity. With blood pressure screening programs in public schools, HTN can be detected early in adolescents and can reduce the risks of developing complications in adulthood. The purpose of this research is to determine if the implementation of blood pressure screenings in public schools increases the early detection of HTN in adolescents ages 13-18.
