Abstract

This thesis Is basically an analysis of the eleven piano trios (piano, violin, and violoncello) of Ludwig van Beethoven. In It, I have dealt with form, harmony, key relationships, melody, rhythm, texture, phrase structure, the handling of the Instruments, and the sonorities that result from certain combinations of the instruments. I have also tried to show how each trio (or set of trios) has certain Individual traits that make It a unique conception. It is my hope that this thesis will help the reader gain some Insights Into the truly great aspects of Beethoven's compositional style, while, at the same time, show Beethoven's progression from a young. Imitative composer to the mature master of such works as the Op. 70 trios and the "Archduke" Trio, Op. 97.
