Abstract
This thesis presents the derivation and application of three theories - the prismatic beam theory, the wedge beam theory, and the approximate tapered beam theory - used in tapered beam stress analysis. In an attempt to prove these stress theories, tests were made using electric resistance strain gages on tapered steel I-beams having taper angles of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 degrees. The tests show the wedge and approximate theories to be accurate within 5 [percent] - 10 [percent] on the conservative side. An annotated bibliography containing approximately 350 references to tapered members is included.
