Abstract
This thesis presents the results of a study of six inch diameter soil columns for treatment of secondary effulent from a sewage plant in Houston, Texas. Laboratory analyses were conducted on major pollutants such as B.O.D., C.O.D., nitrogen, phosphate, and suspended solids. Several parameters including dosage volumes, rates and organic loading were varied for the soil system. Results indicated that: 1) More than 92% of B.O.D. in the secondary effluent can be treated through a five foot soil column. 2) 80% of C.O.D. can be removed by this soil application. 3) Nitrogen and phosphate removal are almost complete. 4) Suspended solids were completely removed and turbidity and color were removed to drinking water standards. 5) pH of the effluent was slightly increased to 7.8 from 7.5 of the influent. 6) There were no major changes in physical properties of the soil after the application of wastewater.
