The use of damping in a continuous system to reduce the response of the system to excitation at nodal points

Abstract

An experimental study concerned with the damping properties of copper-manganese-alloy (Incramute) wires was conducted in vacuum in order to eliminate air damping. The experimental results were compared with those of relatively damping-free hard steel wires of the same diameters. The wires were tested at three different stress levels to show the effect of stress on damping. The copper-manganese alloy wires displayed significantly higher- damping than the steel wires. The damping of the Incramute wires increased directly with the diameter and decreased inversely with the stress level.
