Abstract

Cholesteric liquid crystals were applied to a polyethylene membrane to form a liquid crystal ultrasonic detector (LCUD). The LCUD was used to thermally map ultrasonic fields and to record ultrasonic holograms. An analysis of the thermal response of the membrane to a sinusoidal heating function was performed to determine the resolution of the LCUD when used to map interference patterns. An investigation was made of the hologram transmittance as a function of ultrasonic intensity and experimentally verified.
