Abstract

Previous studies of marijuana use have failed to differentiate users of marijuana only from multiple drug users and from non-drug users. Consequently, much confusion exists concerning characteristics of marijuana users. The present study is an exploratory attempt to differentiate users of marijuana only from multiple drug users and from non-drug users on a number of characteristics. Sixty Ss in the adolescent to young adult age range were selected from a larger group of volunteers on the basis of drug use, age, sex, and ethnic origin. Ss were divided into three groups, i.e., marijuana only (Mo), multiple drug users (M+), and non-drug using control subjects (Co). Comparison of the three groups on demographic characteristics, developmental history information, personality traits, and cognitive functioning tasks indicated that the three groups did, in fact, represent distinct populations. The relevance of these results for future research is discussed.
