Abstract
The Xalapasco de la Joya maar 33 km northeast of San Luis Potosi, S.L.P., Mexico contains a diverse assemblage of nodules that are interpreted as being of lower crust-upper mantle origin. Among these nodules the most abundant are a suite of spinel lherzolites. Six samples from this suite display evidence that crystallization took place at temperatures and pressures consistent with upper mantle depths. Comparison of the bulk chemistry of these samples with ultramafic rocks of similar age on a worldwide basis suggests that the mantle is homogeneous. These samples are interpreted as representing the composition of the upper mantle under Xalapasco de la Joya to a depth of approximately 57 km.
