Item Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and the Effect on Adult Anxiety/Depression(2024-08-02) Johnson, Angelica; Lopez, Armando; Onyeje, Britney; Minor, HaleyAnxiety disorders affect approximately 34% of adults during their lifetime in the United States and are associated with significant distress (Szuhany & Simon, 2022). The COVID-19 pandemic completely upended the typical nurse-patient relationship, drastically reducing the amount of in-person time nurses were able to spend with their patients leading to an overall increase of stress levels in patients suffering from anxiety and depressive disorders (Trevino et al., 2021). Internet-based mindfulness interventions are a new healthcare trend to help patients alleviate stress (Hulsbosch et al., 2020). Numerous studies have shown the benefits of mindfulness training and indicate a positive effect of nurse-led remote mindfulness training sessions on the overall levels of worry, mood, anxiety, and stress (Mirabitu & Verhaeghen, 2024).Item The Impact of Social Media Education on Reported Incidences of Cyberbullying(2024-08-11) Flynn, Brenna; Huff, Madison; Seely, Rebecca; Shamas, ElizabethVictims of cyberbullying have been shown to have higher rates of self-injurious behavior, suicide attempts, and decreased academic efforts (Ng et al., 2022). Educating adolescents about the proper use of social media is an integral part of reducing the incidences of cyberbullying that lead to suicide attempts. Education about proper use of social media lead to more sustainable outcomes for adolescents by changing their attitude (Seyhan & Ayaz, 2024). By making adolescents aware of the consequences of their actions, large strides can be made in promoting the health and well-being of all individuals by decreasing their likelihood of attempting suicide (Yosep et al., 2023).Item Infection Prevention in General Surgery: Single vs. Two Doses of Prophylactic Antibiotics(2024-08-08) Diep, Jacqueline; Garcia, Kristianne; Harlin, Shelby; Kiang, EmilySurgical wound infections are one of the leading causes of hospital-acquired infections, increasing the risk of mortality in patients undergoing general surgery (Ashoobi et al., 2023). General surgeries such as abdominal surgeries increase the risk of surgical infection by 15-25% (Alkaaki et al., 2019). In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, before elective colorectal surgery, patients either received a prophylactic oral dose of antibiotics in addition to pre-procedural IV antibiotics, or they received the standard preprocedural IV antibiotics only. Of the patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery, the addition of a single 1 g dose of ornidazole compared with IV only before surgery substantially reduced surgical site infections (Futier et al., 2022). The administration of an extra dose of antibiotics prior to general surgery can improve patient outcomes by decreasing the incidence of SSIs.Item Impact of Language Interpretation Services on Reducing ER Return Visits for Pediatrics Patients with Limited English Proficiency(2024-08-09) Daugherty, Amanda; Kiang, Kristen; Le, Angelina; Lin, BensonHuman language interpreters have been recognized as a necessary resource for equitable, high quality patient care in emergency department (ED) hospital settings (Hartford et al., 2019). Studies show that patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) are 15% more likely to revisit the ED post discharge and 28% more likely to revisit the ED to be hospitalized (Portillo et al., 2021). Even with the advantages of using human language interpreters, many hospitals have been found to underutilize these resources for patients with LEP, and important differences in patient outcomes exist (Martinez et al., 2021). There has been a lack of research in the last five years pertaining to specifically to revisit rates for pediatric LEP patients from the ED. More research is needed on this topic, as well as comparison of in-person interpretation vs. telephone or other digital services.Item The Effects of Motivational Interviewing on Obese Pediatric BMI & Quality of Life in Primary Care Settings(2024-08-12) Arena, Michael; Johnson, Mackenzie; Oguntosin, Oluwatobi; Prasad, Minu; Samaroo, JustineChildhood obesity affects 1 in 5 children between the ages of 2 and 18 (Wright et al., 2020). Obesity is found in 25.1% in non-Hispanic black children and 23.6% in Hispanic children (Sanyaolu et al., 2019). Pediatric healthcare professionals provide most of the primary care available to children and adolescents and as such play a crucial role in the treatment of childhood obesity. Despite this, primary care has been an underutilized venue for treating and preventing obesity in pediatric patients (Wright et al., 2020). Motivational interviewing (MI) has been shown to be a cost-effective method in reducing BMI in pediatric patients (Woolford et al., 2022).Item Enhanced Prenatal and Perinatal Care for Hypertension Management and it's Impact on Respectful Maternal Care of Black Women(2024-08-13) Amos, Taylor; Cannon, Emily; Njagi, Joy; Verdun, MiaMaternal health disparities in the U.S. persist, with Black women facing significantly higher risks of maternal mortality (49.5 per 100,000 live births) and pregnancyinduced hypertension compared to White women. These disparities are largely due to inadequate prenatal care and lower-quality perinatal care, often influenced by racial inequalities. Interventions that offer timely diagnoses and culturally tailored care are crucial for reducing these disparities and improving outcomes (CDC, 2020; Creanga et al., 2018; Hoyert, 2024).Item Improving Response Times: Wearable Devices vs. Traditional Rounding(2024-08-04) Aquino, Abigail; Valladares, Ligia; Wilkinson, Stephanie; Yang, YuanThe absence of patient monitoring is linked to delayed detection of patient deterioration, leading to increased ICU admissions and mortality rates (Areia et al., 2022). This issue affects elderly patients, those with chronic illnesses, and post-operative individuals, with about 20% of hospital admissions complicated by acute deterioration (Sprogis et al., 2019). Continuous vital sign monitoring (CVSM) enhances early detection by providing real-time data and alerts, facilitating timely medical interventions (Beard et al., 2023). Wearable technologies for CVSM improve patient outcomes and healthcare quality, addressing challenges in patient deterioration detection (Considine et al., 2023). This technology enhances patient safety and efficiency, aligns with trends in remote monitoring, and may reduce hospital stays and improve overall healthcare outcomes (Weenk et al., 2020).Item Candy-Canning Securement Method for Endotracheal Tube: Reducing Unplanned Extubations in the NICU Setting(2024-08-05) Aguilar, Tatiana; Gonzales, Jaelys; Yee, Matthew; Tran, Buu NhuUnplanned extubations (UE) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and their reoccurrence puts the infants at risk of more complications, and in some cases, even death (Dominick et al., 2024). Improper re-taping techniques, such as inadequate securing or excessive tension on the tape, can lead to higher chances of the taping being removed resulting in an increased risk of unplanned extubation (Nair & Smith, 2020). One such method suggested in improving securement of endotracheal tube (ETT) with tape is called "candycaning" which is wrapping the tape around the platform of the securement device and around the ETT in an upward fashion to increase the contact surface area of the adhesion with the ETT device and to prevent tube migration through dilated or moist tape (Bertoni et al., 2020).Item Effects of Early Mobilization Programs on ICU Delirium(2024-08-03) Pittman, Kyle; Zaidi, Inciya; Nguyen, Anhthai; Guzman, FranciscoICU delirium is a prevalent issue in hospitals and may even be underdiagnosed due to the subjectivity of the delirium assessment (Arias-Rivera et al., 2022). ICU patients often require mechanical ventilation due to the severity of their illness which remains one of the highest risk factors for developing ICU delirium. Numerous studies have shown that early mobilization programs are effective in preventing the development of ICU delirium in mechanically ventilated patients (Dirkes & Kozlowski, 2019; Shirvani et al., 2020). Implementing these programs into the ICU could be a step in the right direction in preventing the incidence of delirium in ICU patients with mechanical ventilation.Item Managing Migraine Headaches Through Alternative Therapies for Female Nurses(2024-08-10) Modi, Richa; Mundt, Valerie; Nguyen, Emily; Redondo, RebecaMigraine headaches are a health issue affecting much of the global population. According to a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study in The Lancet Neurology journal, a significant portion of the population is affected by headache disorders in 2021, 3.1 billion people in 2021, and is more common in females compared to males (Steinmetz et al., 2024). Due to the demanding and stressful nature of the nursing profession, nurses, especially female nurses, are particularly susceptible to migraine headaches. Pharmacological analgesics are commonly known treatments used to alleviate and treat migraine headaches. The caveat to these pharmacological treatments include the need to exceed maximum doses to achieve relief from this debilitating condition. Numerous studies have shown that alternative, non-pharmacological therapies are just as effective as pharmacological analgesics. As we explore the use of these alternative therapies that include relaxation, acupuncture, and exercise, statistical data will prove evident that they are just as effective in attenuating migraine headaches (Pi et al., 2022).Item Educating Pediatric Oncology Nurses: Impact on CLABSI Rates(2024-08-06) Manzanares, Sabrina; Merchant, Bria; Sanchez, Cindy; Villamayor, AlexaChemotherapy patients with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of CLABSIs without proper nursing education (Redstone et al., 2022). 23,389 CLABSI cases were reported in 2022 (Center for Disease Control, 2022; Jarding & Flynn Makic, 2021). Reducing CLABSI rates requires well-trained nurses through a few interventions we put together to create the Educational CVC bundle (Hightower et al., 2022; Redstone et al., 2023; Santos et al., 2019; Star et al., 2024).
