This group demanded equity in educational opportunities and outcomes for Black students in 1968, only five years after UH desegregated its student population. AABL advocated for an Afro-American Studies Department, increasing the minimum wage for employees, increasing resources for Black students, and better relationships with the larger Houston area. One activist, Lynn Eusan, became UH's first Black Homecoming queen in 1968.Item Houston Roots and the Texas Gulf Coast Sound Embodied in the Music of Los Skarnales and Nick Gaitan & the Umbrella Man(Journal of Texas Music History, 2021) Manning, MaryHouston is an industrial city, the home of the Ship Channel, and the region’s petrochemical industry hub since the early 20th century. Houston has historically attracted those looking for work who brought with them music reflecting their cultural heritage. Continual migration as the twentieth century progressed ensured that Houston’s music continued to reflect its rich multicultural diversity. Houston’s music is influenced by and influences the region’s music—the Texas Gulf Coast sound. Houston area recording studios and record producers were crucial elements of developing this regional sound. Historically, Houston’s roots music was highly hybridized, a coalescence of older genres combined with developing and often popular musical sounds. While genre combining to create a local sound is not specific to the Texas Gulf Coast region, Houston’s roots music is as idiosyncratic as the Bayou City itself. This unique combination of hybridized roots genres has influenced two bands—Los Skarnales and Nick Gaitan & the Umbrella Man—that have merged these roots genres with popular music to create their version of the Texas Gulf Coast sound. The author conducted comprehensive interviews with musicians from these two bands, namely Felipe Galvan, Nick Gaitan, and Roberto Rodriguez III. These musicians serve as key oral historical sources to better understand the recent evolution of roots music in Houston.Item Isaac Rodriguez Interview One(2017-04-02) Rodriguez, Isaac; Manning, MaryItem Isaac Rodriguez Interview Two Transcript(2017-09-23) Rodriguez, Isaac; Manning, MaryItem Nick Gaitain Interview One Transcript(2015-08-09) Gaitan, Nick; Manning, MaryItem Nick Gaitain Interview Two(2017-09-21) Gaitan, Nick; Manning, MaryItem Nick Gaitain Interview Two Transcript(2017-09-21) Gaitan, Nick; Manning, MaryItem Nick Gaitan Interveiw One(2015-08-09) Gaitan, Nick; Manning, MaryItem Putting the Puzzle Pieces Together: Forming UH Libraries Digital Preservation Landscape(2015-04-28) Thompson, Santi; Wu, Annie; Krewer, Drew; Manning, Mary; Spragg, RobAs more institutions digitize rare and unique materials and acquire born digital objects, the need for a robust and sustainable digital preservation program is critical for long-term access to this content. In the summer of 2014, the University of Houston Libraries established a Digital Preservation Task Force to create a digital preservation policy and identify strategies, actions, and tools needed to preserve digital assets maintained by UH Libraries. This presentation will outline the digital preservation policy tool kit being used by the task force to generate a digital preservation policy and develop a digital preservation system. A substantial portion of the presentation will focus on the creation of the digital preservation policy for UH Libraries. The task force selected the Action Plan for Developing a Digital Preservation Program as a model to draft the policy. Conforming to the OAIS Reference Model and the Trusted Digital Repository guidelines, this document guides institutions through the creation of a high-level framework for digital preservation, drafting local digital preservation policies and procedures, and identifying resources needed to sustain a digital preservation program. Presenters will describe how they used this tool to generate digital preservation documentation and will share portions of their work to date. Additionally, the presentation will focus on the methods used to identify potential digital information systems to assist with the preservation process. Presenters will outline the process of selecting three potential systems to evaluate and share the task forces results from testing one system. The presentation will conclude with recommendations from the task force and a discussion on how others can apply the methods used by UH Libraries to implement a digital preservation solution for their materials.Item Roberto Rodriguez III Interview One(2015-06-21) Rodriguez, Roberto; Manning, MaryItem Roberto Rodriguez III Interview One Transcript(2015-06-21) Rodriguez, Roberto; Manning, MaryItem Roberto Rodriguez III Interview Two Transcript(2017-08-22) Rodriguez, Roberto; Manning, Mary
