Item Detecting Radio Distortion is the Ionosphere by use of a High Power High Frequency Transmitter(2023-04-13) Prejean, Daniel; Sardo, Nikolai; Perry, Connor; Dinse, Jeffrey; Flores, Edgar; Castillo, AlexisThe Undergraduate Student Instrument Project at the University of Houston is constructing a balloon-borne and ground-based instrument to measure the scatter, reflection, refraction, and absorption coefficient of the ionosphere, focusing on the HF band. The experiment involves inducing a beat-wave by transmitting a signal from the HAARP antenna array to a Swarm satellite, along with an uplink signal, and using the differences in the broadcasted and received signals to calculate distortion coefficients. The resulting ion-acoustic wave will be detected using the SuperDARN radar in Kodiak, Alaska. This experiment, in collaboration with HAARP, Swarm, and SuperDARN, will provide important information on ionospheric effects and be useful for space science and space weather research.
